The Antioxidant Connection
During the majority of metabolic reactions occurring in the body, oxygen is used. In the process, oxygen sometimes reacts with body compounds and produces highly unstable molecules known as free radicals. In addition, free radicals are produced through a variety of other events including normal fat metabolism, prolonged exercise, exposure to the sun and pollution. Although some free radicals roaming around the body are helpful, like in the case of fighting off viruses and bacteria and keeping other reactions in balance, having too many are thought to lead to widespread cellular damage, aging and degenerative disease. Free radicals are normally kept in check by the action of free radical scavengers that occur naturally in the body. The body maintains a couple of lines of defense against free radical damage with scavengers that include certain enzymes that rely on specific nutrients like selenium, copper, manganese and zinc. The body also provides a small team of antioxidant compounds to help fight free radicals, but its primary source of antioxidants is found in the diet. Common antioxidants include Vitamin E and Vitamin C.
AglyMax-A True Antioxidant
Not only does the AglyMax process produce concentrated isoflavones that can be used for the relief of menopausal symptoms, powerful antioxidants are also generated in the form of metabolites (by-products caused by transformation) and other fermented factors. Although the research is still in its infancy, AglyMax possesses SOD-like activity, an extremely important discovery in the prevention of free radical damage and promotion of cellular health and wellness. SOD, also known as superoxide dismutase is a copper-requiring enzyme that protects cell membranes against free radical damage. AglyMax is thought to have similar free radical protective attributes. In a recent measurement of SOD-like activity of commercially available isoflavone ingredients, AglyMax scored significantly higher in its antioxidant properties than other isoflavone mixtures. These results are due to AglyMax’s unique fermentation process.
