The Antioxidant Connection

Antioxidants and Hot Flashes-Is There a Link?
Menopause is the point at which a woman stops ovulating and menstruation ceases, indicating the end of fertility. Many years before a woman stops ovulating, the ovaries slow the production of the hormones, estrogen, progesterone and testosterone. Accompanying this decrease in estrogen levels is a decrease in specific enzymes, which may alter proper capillary blood vessel expansion. A decrease in capillary expansion may be one of the primary reasons women experience hot flashes so it is essential to keep them open and maintain blood flow. In animal studies conducted with AglyMax, nitric oxide (NO) levels (an oxygen derived free radical) in the blood were increased. As stated before, many free radicals are important and necessary for normal bodily processes. It seems that with an increase in the NO level, specific enzymes are maintained, which helps to ensure that the capillaries will remain open, and potentially lead to a reduction in hot flashes. Interestingly, pure isoflavones did not increase NO blood levels in the rat model, which lends itself to the theory that the unique fermentation process of the soy germ has a significant affect on isoflavones and their abilities to act as antioxidants and relieve hot flashes. Research on AglyMax will continue as it has countless applications for health and wellness, in both women and men.
