Isoflavones

You’ve heard about them in the news. You’ve heard that soy isoflavones are good for your health, especially the role they play in helping to relieve menopausal symptoms such as hot flashes. But did you know that:
  • There are many different types of isoflavones.
  • Isoflavones cannot be absorbed in the initial form found in soy.
  • Isoflavones are absorbed in different parts of the body depending on their structure.
  • The effects of isoflavones differ based on their structure.
  • There is a wide variance in how people can process isoflavones.
What are Soy Isoflavones?
Soy isoflavones are plant-derived compounds often referred to as phytoestrogens or plant estrogens. It is important to note that isoflavones are not hormones even though they are called plant-estrogens. They are, however, similar in shape to the estrogen produced within our bodies, and have the ability to bind to the same estrogen receptors as estrogen.

Isoflavone Nomenclature
Isoflavones are found in predominantly two forms, as glycosides and aglycones. The name of the specific isoflavone is determined by its form. Take a look at the chart below.

Glycosides (isoflavones with sugar attached) Aglycones (readily absorbable by the body)
Genistin
Daidzin
Glycitin
Genistein
Daidzein
Glycitein

Notice the “ein” ending found in the aglycones. It signifies the completed conversion of the glycoside to the aglycone.

AglyMax Contains Isoflavone Aglycones
As an ingredient derived from the germ of the soy bean, AglyMax is rich in several isoflavones, particularly in daidzein, an important isoflavone when it comes to menopausal relief. Isoflavones are thought to be helpful during menopause because of their ability to replace or substitute for the depleted estrogen levels in the body, which is believed to be the major contributor of hot flashes and other symptoms occurring during menopause.

Isoflavones found in most soy foods and supplements are found in their original form, as a glycoside. In this form, the isoflavones are attached to a sugar molecule, which makes them too large to be absorbed by the stomach or intestinal wall. The sugar molecule must first be removed through fermentation or similar processing in order to free the active part of the isoflavone. This free form of isoflavone is called an aglycone, and is similar in structure to estrogen. As its name implies, AglyMax contains maximum levels of aglycones for use in menopausal relief.
