What is Menopause?
Menopause is the point at which a woman stops ovulating and menstruation ceases, indicating the end of fertility. All women experience menopause, but in a unique and individual way.
How Do I Know if I Have Menopause?
As a normal, natural event, menopause is usually confirmed when a woman has not had a menstrual period for 12 consecutive months. Most women experience menopause between the ages of 40 and 58, with the average at about age 51. Some woman reach menopause as early as their 30’s and a few in their 60’s.
What Types of Symptoms are Associated with Menopause?
Physical signs of menopause may begin many years before the final menstrual period. Some women experience few if any symptoms during this time but others may suffer from some or all, of the following with varying levels of severity:
Menopause Symptoms
Anxiety
Fatigue
Bloating
Headaches
Dry skin
Irritability
Mood swings
Hot flashes
Insomnia
Incontinence
Night sweats
Weight Gain
Reduced stamina
Heart palpitations
Vaginal dryness

How Do I Know If I am Having a Hot Flash?
As the most common symptom during menopause, the “hot flash” affects two-thirds of North American women. Most of these women experience them for 3 to 5 years before they taper off. Although the exact cause is unknown, hot flashes are thought to be the result of changes in the part of the brain (hypothalamus) that regulates body temperature. If the brain senses that a woman is too warm, it starts a chain of events to cool her down.
Hypothalamus senses body is too warm
Blood vessels near surface of skin begin to dilate
Increases blood flow to the surface of skin to dissipate heat
Produces a red, flushed look to face and neck
Perspiration begins to cool the body and cold chill occurs
