Hot Flashes-Worth Mentioning
As the most common symptom reported during menopause, the “hot flash” affects two-thirds of North American women. Some of these women experience them for 3 to 5 years before they taper off. Although the exact cause is unknown, hot flashes are thought to be the result of changes in the part of the brain (hypothalamus) that regulates body temperature. If the brain senses that a woman is too warm, it starts a chain of events to cool her down.
When hot flashes occur at night, they may induce heavy perspiration and this condition is known as “night sweats”. Menopause related hot flashes usually follow a consistent pattern that is unique for each woman. Hot flashes often increase with stress and may be accompanied by rapid heartbeat and feelings of anxiety. Not all hot flashes are related to menopause and like all symptoms experienced during this transitional time, other potential causes should be ruled out by your health care practitioner.
